Fr. Fernando Cortz

XXX Sunday Ordinary Time – B 27 October 2024

Fr. Fernando Cortz

Today’s scripture advises us to leave no one behind – no one, be careful to encourage all who seek out Jesus. Jesus is the divine high priest yet supremely human. He lived out the human condition as a human being. He is understanding and compassionate because he himself is afflicted by human weakness. Like Jesus, we must remember that the ministry of the Gospel is given to us by God. It is an honor to serve the people called by God.

The story of Bartimaeus, the blindman beggar, presented a challenge to the disciples then and to us today. In truth, who was really truly blind: Bartimaeus or the Jesus’ disciples. Without physical sight, Bartimaeus in a spirit of faith notices that Jesus is present and he calls to him with kindness and confidence, “Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me. Many told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the louder. In the same way may brothers and sisters cry for justice and help from the children of God. Who is more blind, us or those who cry out to us before God?

Many of us our blind, guided only by the aspirations offered by this world. We are blind because we refuse to see the work presents to us each day. Our daily work is to give Jesus to others and to bring others to Jesus. This is a life-long work. It is not just for a few people but Someone will offer to everyone every day. We offer Jesus to the people, especially those on the edges of society, those left behind on the side on the side of the road.

The church continues to live this challenge. The Synod in Rome reflects the need to engage society and the world. It reflects the Holy Spirit at work in the world and the Church. Out Holy Father Francis invites, bishops, priests, religious and lay people to the table. Everyone is seen. Everyone is heard. It lives and breathes the Spirit of the Second Vatican Council and the dreams of Pope Saint John XXIII to open the Church to the world. He invited us to open the windows of the Church, to let in fresh air and to allow the Holy Spirit to fly freely among all peoples. We are the vanguard of divine transformations that only God can make happen. The vision of the Church, its prophetic mission, is easily blinded. Ambitions quickly overshadow the light and delays changes that are needed. Jesus asks us the question, “What do you want me to do for you?” and we could say, “Lord, let me see as You see!”. Our faith in God, supported by Jesus, will give us confidence to ask God’s help in bring the light and help of the kingdom of God to others.
