Fr. Fernando Cortez

Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King

Fr. Fernando Cortez

Matthew’s Gospel today celebrates life, life eternal. Eternal life is here and now! Where does it begin? It begins in how we treat each other and most important, recognize that we are all brothers and sisters, not just the people who matter to us, but everyone.

Christ will come in glory with his angels to judge, which means to save, to set things right and take his people back home to God. If we accept each other, he will accept us. God the Father gave this authority to Jesus over everybody. No exceptions.

The world has forgotten and ignored so many people, day after day. We are the shepherds who scatter God’s flock. So, like Ezequiel’s holy Shepherd, God has come to shows us and everyone the way back home to him. No one can do this, only God’s own Son, Jesus the Good Shepherd and Divine Judge. In Him we have mercy, if we show mercy.

In this life we are to recognize all persons as our brothers and sisters. So, we need to help those most in need of help. Ezequiel and Jesus teach us who are our brothers and sisters. It is the “least ones” of this world. They are “anawim”, these are the poorest of the poor. They have names, they have reason live, they are human beings. They have mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, wives, husbands and children, just like us. Some people forget them and pretend they do not exist.

What should we do for them?

Feed them with good food, give them good things to drink.

Welcome them, even if we do not know or understand them.

Remember, strangers and foreigners are special to God.

Cloth them, provide a home, protection and safety from harm.

Many brothers and sisters are prisoners, some live like slaves, no money or land for themselves and their families. They have no friends, no where to go..

We know these people: Chinese refugee minorities, Palestinians, Ukrainians, Venezuelans, Cubans, Afghani, Tibetans, Koreans, Somalis, Sudanese and Haitians.

Sometimes the poor in our own families. It might be hunger or it might be loneliness. Sometimes our own relatives suffer quietly…

If we do something for any of these people, it is done to Jesus Himself. He is in everyone we meet, and everyone we ignore.

Finally, if we want the eternal life Saint Paul shows us, then we must imitate Jesus before we die. Dying is the last example of being like Jesus. He and all of us are like Adam who died. Why not us? But before we follow the last example of Jesus let us try to follow his example in life, while we have life and have it in abundance. God we greatly bless us! Take a chance and follow Jesus…
